Mamata hosts annual Bhai Phonta for TMC leaders, Rajib Banerjee calls joining BJP a “mistake”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hosted her annual Bhai Phonta ceremony on Sunday at her Kalighat residence. The event, celebrated annually, involves a traditional ritual where the Chief Minister blesses prominent leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) by applying a ceremonial mark on their foreheads, symbolizing the bond between brothers and sisters. This year's attendees included several senior party figures, such as Subrata Bakshi, Firhad Hakim, Javed Khan, Aroop Biswas, and Rajib Banerjee, all of whom participated in the ceremonial blessing.

Rajib Banerjee, who had a brief stint with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prior to the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, spoke candidly about his past decision during the ceremony. He characterized his time with the BJP as a mistake, indicating that it was an error in judgment. After leaving the BJP, he rejoined TMC in October 2021, during a ceremony in Agartala where he was reinstated by TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. Rajib reaffirmed his commitment to the TMC and is currently focused on his role in the upcoming by-elections for the Medinipur constituency.

The Bhai Phonta ceremony not only serves a cultural purpose but also acts as a platform for TMC leaders to reaffirm their loyalty to Mamata Banerjee and the party. Rajib Banerjee expressed his anticipation for this event each year, stating it represents an important tradition that strengthens the ties among party members.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim also participated in the festivities, arriving in traditional attire. Although he refrained from making political statements during the event, his presence highlighted the importance of such gatherings in fostering a sense of community among TMC leaders. The ceremony included discussions on party activities and upcoming events, reinforcing the collaborative spirit among party members.
